ERIN WASSON x LOWLUV

Though I stand by my skepticism for all things Erin Wasson I do have a soft spot for her soft spot for pitbulls and I am not going to argue her LowLuv collection. Its very reminiscent of Pamela Love's work in the imagery that it draws from but a. its priced excruciatingly reasonably (only excruciating because it means I could, maybe, purchase a lot of it) and b. well, they both bother me in the same way as fashion figures, so mostly just a. The collection is trendy but not obnoxious and its cultural references are simplified rather than glaring and obnoxious as a white girl paying homage to a lot of Native American and other worldly symbols could easily have been. I give her a lot of credit for staying within some very important boundaries that already exist somewhat outside the box.

Not everyone shares these sentiments, however, notes My Fashion Life:

Fans of Erin Wasson and her Low Luv jewellery line will be pleased – she’s just shot a new campaign, starring herself, naturally, wearing the latest Low Luv pieces which can only mean a new collection is about to drop. Shot by Paola Kudacki – who says “the clothes were not necessary” – the SS11 lookbook shows a naked warrior-like Wasson (inspired by her role in Lagerfeld’s Pirelli calendar, perhaps?) clad in her label’s jewellery designs. An interesting concept, maybe, but one that doesn’t seem to be going down too well with the public so far. Comments left on the Cut include, “I wish I could un-see that” and similar stick-to-modelling sentiments. Well, we for one have long been fans of Low Luv’s easy cool pieces and, cleopatra campaign aside, can’t wait for the new collection to bow – that gold bangle chained to a ring is top of our lust-list.

Regardless, I have some of the simpler, silver pieces bookmarked for future wanting. Well see if they ever get added to my collection because I may or may not cave into the evil eye and triangle pieces, but theres certainly a chance for Wasson in my wardrobe.

GOT MY RAYBANS ON

Finally. Since long before I ever came to Israel, since before I lived in NYC, even, I have wanted this pair of RayBans and sometime last month I decided now was the time. Unfortunately, here in Israel, these cost about four times their US price and so I was forced to wait. Until this past week when I randomly went into a sunglasses shop in Tel Aviv's Dizengoff Center and there they were for the equivalent of their stateside cost. So, needless to say, now they are mine. And its about time, I was getting so tired of my RetroSuperFutures.

UNNATURAL COLOR

Not since I was 17 have I wanted so badly to dye my hair so many ridiculous colors. At that age, I indulged - some would say too much - on black and blonde and red, but now, as a semi-sensible adult, I am forced to restrain myself from dipping chunks of my hair into even brighter colors than before. No thanks to Rihanna, for whom my love is common knowledge amongst those that really know me, and the beautiful red-pink shes been donning for a few months now, or the TOPSHOP collection I previously mentioned.

Theres a chance I will be giving in to this urge in the next week or so before I head off to Greece. Only time will tell how long this trend can stick and how long I can deny it.

Without a source of income, as a volunteer, my shopping habits have had to change dramatically since Ive been in Israel. I still find myself scouring boutiques in hopes of finding pieces for around 100 shekels (30-ish dollars) but luck is rare and so I am doing what I can with occasional random finds along with major international stores like H&M, Zara, and TOPSHOP. The latter being the place where I end up with a heap of clothes I want, all almost double the price of the same items in the US or Europe, but I usually end up with some sale thing or a bathing suit. Regardless, the prints that have begun showing up on TOPSHOP racks for SS 2011 arent hurting anything, especially the Unique collection.

IN THE HOLYLAND

Its been two months and three days since they raised the landing gear and I left for the Middle East and as much as I wish I had anything fashion-worthy to share on the regular, there is no denying that theres no greater use for anything other than a great pair of skinny jeans and a tank top here in Israel. Shopping has been kept to a minimal and the best finds are found in bus station cheap shops - 20 shekels for pencil skirts, 50 shekels for bandage dresses, 10 shekels for tank tops, and keep in mind that a shekel is about a quarter - and the occasional TopShop or Zara.

Life is amazing here. No doubt there was some adjusting to do, especially after such an earth-shattering Summer, but I am finding myself generally very happy. Hopefully this week, with my parents in town and the group of us doing some solid traveling (and shopping!!!) I will have more to say or experience on the matter. With that, I leave you with the two better photos since Ive been here, though there are hundreds!

SUMMER BUMMER

Summer has all but almost come and gone and in 17 days I leave for Israel. Just like my countdown to leaving NYC, I dont think I really imagined that this day would ever finally arrive but now that it is so vivid on the horizon, the pressure is on, mostly, to get myself packed. Chronic shopper that I am, though this Summer has proved healthy for my saving habits, this packing experience is about to become a shitstorm as I am pressed with the task of putting everything I might get the whim to wear into two suitcases and two suitcases alone, shoes included. Wish me luck!

Good news is, Ill be back in maxi skirts thanks to Shabbat regulations!

GONE MISSIN'

Long story short (again), I moved from NYC to Baltimore, didnt have Internet until three days ago,
have otherwise been swimming in rivers and BBQing nonstop and life is so good - except I have
nowhere to wear all of my beautiful clothes and it is hard to dress otherwise.

LEAVING NEW YORK

There are a lot of changes, for me, happening currently and there are a lot of upcoming changes in the near future. First of all, it was my Birthday two weeks ago, also my New York University graduation ceremony - though I, technically, graduated in December - and lots of amazing new things happening at OAK just in time for me to leave, sadly. However, that digital camera I bought about a month back has come in very handy in documenting my final weeks in New York City, something that is much more monumental than I originally anticipated.

LIGHT BOXES

Originally, when I began blogging, I lived at Disposable City but what was rather personal - though oftentimes vague - was frequently attacked by the many people who neither know me not like me. On that front, I reviewed several books under the very harsh criticism with which I read and those entries, of course, were also attacked with mostly comments against my appearance - how what I look like and how I feel about a book are related, Ill never know but regardless, that was a common reaction from those so enamored with hating me that they just had to read my blog.

Anyhow, on that blog I also confessed my own adoration for Ellen Frances, a fellow NYC resident and blogger, but also a pretty incredible genius. Well, just now I got a message from her about the book trailer she just created for Shane Jones' new book Light Boxes and I mostly didnt even have to debate whether or not Id post it but upon watching, there were even more reasons "Why not?!" For instance, its pretty. Also, Ellens precious baby Oona guest stars. Also, it is sort of spooky. Granted, I have no idea what the book is about or even if I like it, I do like this trailer enough to post it.

Of the book, itself, however, Ellen writes:

When I first read an excerpt of Light Boxes online I felt like I was witnessing the birth of one of the greatest works of art of our time. This was when it had first come out on Publishing Genius. I blogged about it here and was sent a copy of the book with a note inside thanking me for the blog post. The novel exceeded my expectations. The entire book was a work of art. The layout of the text was considered in a way that made the book itself feel alive. The story was written from abstract perspectives, descriptions were poetic and the imagery breathtaking and vivid. It was not too surprising that the book was picked up by Penguin and the film rights sold to Spike Jonze. Having an original copy of the indie release, I can proudly say I knew this little book when...

I never knew much of Shane Jones. I knew he had a blog (I found one of my videos on it in 2008) and his name was thrown around amidst all of the Brooklyn writerly types. Even with his name amidst this 'hipster'-esque group of same sames - I was pleased to find he did not fall into their line of piggy backing. Instead in emails he seems kind and sincere and his writing is actually beautiful, revolutionary and yes, I will say it... pure genius.

When Shane wrote to ask me if I would like to make something for the book release, obviously I said yes. It was a great escape for me this week to work on a short book trailer for the novel's release through Penguin (May 25, 2010). The novel sets the imagination on fire and the only downside of doing anything for this book is not having enough time or resources to work on it for the rest of my life! This sounds dramatic but I kind of do mean it...

Also, perhaps a book review with a brief synopsis might peak any interest:

A small town is besieged by “February.” The winter month, yes, but also a powerful, godlike being of the same name who won’t allow the sun to return. Something else is going on: Ever since February came, flight has been banned, and children have gone missing.

At the center is a balloonist named Thaddeus, whose daughter has disappeared and whose wife drowned herself in the marsh. The fever-dream fable winding its way through Jones’s debut novel takes many detours, but the town’s fruitless, ambitious battle against winter propels it. They attempt to wipe out the snow by pouring troughs of hot water downhill, but February counters with a prodigious moss crop that covers houses and chokes animals. When a horde of children living in underground tunnels presents a war plan, February’s wife tricks Thaddeus into believing it’s spring.

We expect a vibrant imagination in our authors, but charm is an underrated quality, and Jones has both in spades. Light Boxes twists through a waking nightmare, where violence slashes through characters but vines and flowers emerge in blood’s stead. The macabre feels more mischievous than menacing, which allows Jones to occasionally overindulge his precious side, though never enough to make us wince. Tempted though we were to read the endless winter as strict metaphor, Jones is a little too freewheeling to let anything stick. Instead, we end up with a sweet, surreal battle in the snow. - Time Out Chicago

Last year, finding my birthday dress was last minute and ended up a complete mad dash to make the Vena Cava Thoth Dress mine - but alas I was successful and the dress was amazing and made for a great story. This year seems to have been a smoother search, something almost fated. Just a day or two ago I stumbled across photos of Australian brand Shakuhachi's amazing cut-out dresses and blogged about them. Then in a more complete search of their wares, I found the perfect birthday dress. It is something special, beyond black, a celebratory color without being crazy, shows the midriff without getting slutty-Birthday, and something I am eager to wear beyond my 22nd. With that, I present to you what I just ordered for myself for what will be a pretty festive celebration of not only my Birthday but my college Graduation as well as my departure from New York City to the Holy Land (yes, its happening, Im off to Israel in the next few months). I think this Shakuhachi dress is the perfect culminatory garment.

There is no way to say it enough: Chris Habana is the sweetest, not to mention insanely talented jewelry designer of which I can think to adorn myself in the wares. Well, in my journey and eventual arrival at his studio/apartment to obtain a linked triangle bracelet and half moon plate necklace, my beloved pup, Ee-mah, ended up with the most adorable and perfect addition to her collar: a simple but sturdy silver triangle. Im so into it and even though shes a dog, shes my dog, so I am sure she has impeccable taste.

MARYAM NASSIR ZADEH

Their website has been a tab up on my Firefox for over a week, with the intention of blogging about them but Ive been a bit of a procrastinator because, honestly, there is so much to be said about Maryam Nassir Zadeh and their amazing selection of items on sale and in their showroom. Needless to say, I was quite surprised to find myself in the actual store in Manhattan's Lower East Side just yesterday and again, needless to say, I was blown away. Every item on their racks (and floors) was note worthy, beautiful, and way out of my price range but I loved it nonetheless. Their showroom houses buzzing brands like Bodkin, All For the Mountain, Samma, and Lindsey Thornburg but also carry all kinds of collections and lines that I am eager to learn more about. Not to mention their vintage options were incredible, mostly in jewelry.

I cannot wait to, hopefully, someday, be able to afford some of the gems that adorn this amazing NYC shop.

Ages ago, a friend of mine took photos of Lykke Li for NYLON magazine and, curious, I found her Myspace and its been love ever since. She did, however, take long enough to come out with anything to follow up her 2008 debut, Youth Novels. So, thank god this song is so good - otherwise I dont think Id be able to forgive her for allowing its use in New Moon.

THE JACKET DONE RIGHT

This is the best Ive ever seen The Jacket look. As much as I love it, I rarely wear it because I find it so hard to put together without looking too-something. All black leaves it too harsh. With more denim makes it ridiculous. Colors - and this might just be me - leave my body looking cluttered. But the sheer navy is just perfection. I love a good hint of the bra but had that top been black, it wouldve been, as I said, too harsh. So, well done to Cameron Russell - I will be using this for inspiration, possibly tomorrow, in hopes of getting more use out of that beautiful piece.

Nudes, Blacks, Midriffs, Mini-Everything, Burnt Orange, Pleats, Knee Highs - its like my wildest dream!

What is Carven? It's a French house supposedly most famous for its perfume Ma Griffe but like I said in my previous post beauty dunce here wouldn't know that at all. Ailing French houses getting a revamp is an all too familiar story but Guillaume Henry seems to have steered it in a slightly different direction, creating directional clothes, but not overly so, that are as Fashionista put it 'Marc by Marc Jacobs' prices (evident by the current collection on NAP). The New York Times likened Carven to Cacharel (another C I talked about for the new tide of fresh injection) in its price point pitching. Which brings us back to the A/W 10-11 collection for which I could realistically be saving pennies for if the prices hover around the £300 mark for a dress, £500-600 for a coat and less for all the other bits and bobs, namely the ruched gloves. Whatever Carven may be, no matter where from or who by, I adore this collection. Id wear every look - if
only I could pull each one off - and the color palette is a dream. Even the single model chosen to display
every look is divine. Where can I find these pieces, thats what I want to know.

PENDELTON X URBAN OUTFITTERS

Classic camping gear aside, Pendelton is produces some of the most amazing items around. My little Pendelton backpack took me all over the Israelis mountaintops and deserts and held everything, braved water, and still looks brand new - well made stuff. I cant wait to get my hands on some of these pieces theyve made for Urban Outfitters. Wallets are already in-store but the blankets and towels are where its at.

THE SPIKE BAG

There is no denying the majesty that is this genius of Zana Bayne of Garbage Dress' Spike Bag. Zana is something of an enigma to me - and I like her that way - because she rooms with one of my co-workers and many people around me know her somewhat well. But I so enjoy admiring from afar the amazing things she creates and wears, something to do with the fantasy, etc. Regardless, the Spike Bag was a delight to log back onto the Internet after a week and discover. Someday soon I hope I will randomly just need some small shoulder bag (I dont need anything, in fact I have far too many new bags right now) and just buy it. Until then I will covet.

So, I was out of town (NYC) this past week, attending United Blood (Richmond, VA) and then visiting my parents (Baltimore, MD) but now I am back. It was a much deserved week away from things, though, as I have mentioned, I am moving out of NYC in a little under two months for what will be a very extended amount of time - at least a year. Not only is Chris Habana one of the most adorable, delightful, generous, likable guys around, but his jewelry line continues to blow my mind, collection after collection. This season features more delicate looks with smaller triangles and shiny silvers but this Fall, Habana turns up the heat with cubism, oxidized and gunmetal, bronze and bones galore. I cannot even put my anticipation into words. Someone is going to be sending me serious packages in Israel.

Alright, so, I have this thing where I dont wear pants. Almost ever. Sure, I have pants - two pairs of black skinny jeans (both OAK), skinny indigo Dominos, high waisted boyfriend jeans in baby blue by Philip Lim, baby blue Naked and Famous super skinny and super low-rise, etc - but whenever I put them on, I remember that I find jeans incredibly uncomfortable and, knowing that two hours into my day Im going to regret my decision, I almost always take them off and change before heading out the door. But today, in the wake of Spring/Summer weather and after randomly watching three hours of LA Ink last night and seeing Kat Von D in a pair just like them, I randomly decided to try on a pair of almost-white jeans that we had in the store. They were a size 27 so it was an enormous stretch of my imagination that they would even fit but somehow...they did! and theyre Cheap Mondays! and theyre comfortable! and stretchy! and Im so into them.

I see more pants in my future, starting with these new babies:

Im also due a visit to Urban Outfitters, as I am very impressed with this season looks, especially the legging-like options for my legs. But, as usual, I am prepared for disappointment. I dont have models legs and so I am easily fooled by lookbook photos. Some people can pull off pants and leggings and look sexy and long and feminine but I dont have this natural skill. Im not one of those people. At five foot two, I need heels and minis to give my legs the illusion of length but regardless, Im giving it my all. Trying to, at least!

Its now been five months since Ee-mah first came into my life and, as some of you may know, they have easily been the happiest five months of my life. Shes my first dog so, of course, there were some challenges and though she was very well behaved when I first took her in, after buckling down and training her, she is now the best dog Ive ever had the pleasure of knowing. Shes about fourteen months old now and has fully shaken her initial inclination towards small dogs (due to forced breeding when she was only six months old, making her an eight month old mother immediately seperated from her puppies) and has learned impecable manners. Anyone who has met her knows she is endlessly affectionate and beautiful, if I do say so myself. Anyhow, I know this is a fashion blog but spreading the word about pitbulls (thought Ee-mah is technically an American Staffordshire, these two breeds - the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier are nearly identical. AmStaffs are the Show Pit, just a hair taller, leaner and with a bigger head, if you can even imagine that) and proper dog training has become a major part of my life and I have collected a few inspirational stories about the loyalty and good nature of pitbulls, especially where their strength - something often put in a negative light - has proven to be invaluable.

Hopefully at least one of these titles interests you enough to read and open your mind to one of the smartest and strongest breeds out there. I realize it is hard to overlook all of the negative Pitbull press but there are several things to note: a. any dog can be trained as a fighting mechanism, Pitbulls fall victim to this solely because of their physical strength and loyalty as an eager to please breed, b. many smaller dogs are just as vicious as mal-trained Pits but because of their size are overlooked as unruly creatures, c. For months now I have had Friend of Mine bookmarked, aching for something from any of their collections - honestly, almost anything would do. This Australian brand mustve read my mind when it came to designing a delightfully 90s inspired series of collections. Though I cant see myself in everything by Friend of Mine, I love looking at it all. Well, finally, a few weeks ago, I placed my order for a pair of platform clogs and a leather backpack. As these were coming from across the globe, I ran a big risk in being disappointed and then potentially stuck with the items but when I opened the package two days ago, I couldnt have been happier or more impressed. The backpack is adorable and is already my new daily bag but its the shoes that have really swept me off my feet - not literally, of course, because really they keep me wonderfully planted. They are so well designed as, despite being clogs, stay perfectly on the foot and are comfortable and easy to walk in. I am so thrilled to wear these every day this summer and wouldnt mind a second pair, to be honest.

I, however, think I picked some of the less obvious pieces by Friend of Mine as there are actually some really amazing pieces that I could imagine infinite people in NYC and, well, anywhere just absolutely loving. but Im going to say it anyway. Alexander Wang and Helmut Lang really did a beautiful job nailing
the perfect direction for both design houses.

Its common knowledge that I love Alexander Wang, but every time he creates a new collection Im
just so proud that he hasnt disappointed where he easily could have. This season he brings us bare
midriffs and sweaters. Velvet, mesh and fur appropriately allocated in beautiful drapery that we all
know will still be wearable, one piece at a time, for the regular girl just lusting after these sexy looks.

Helmut Lang, on the other hand, makes me want to wear pants more - something that very rarely
happens and may actually occur today with this collection as inspiration. Mostly, those jackets are
unreal. Really perfecting the drape of Rick Owens but with the cozy elegance of additional fur and
deep hues of green, red, and blue.

So, beyond the fact that Ive just seriously neglected this blog as the past few months have been unreasonably busy, I have also neglected to mention that I got a dog! Her name is Ee-mah (when I got her, her name was "Mama" and so, to represent a more hopeful future, I changed it but not dramatically. "Ee-mah" means "mother" in Hebrew) and I couldnt possibly love her more. Shes an American Staffordshire Terrier and possibly the sweetest dog you could ever meet. AmStaffs are between Pitbulls and Bulldogs - technically what Bulldogs looked like when they were pure bred and now considered the Show Pit - and like most Terriers, she has had a terrible past. Whoever had her in their care before me used her only as a puppy mill, breeding her the moment she went into heat and so, at just under a year old, she has long since had puppies, nursed them, and been dumped at a kill shelter. As fate would have it, mere days into her stay at the Foster Shelter, I came to pick out a dog and when we met it was love at first sight. I could honestly gush for the rest of eternity but instead Ill just prove how gorgeous she is (honestly, people stop me in the street, its kind of really fun).

As promised, here are a few more photos from our night out as The Manson Girls (not the Marilyn Manson Sisters as more than one person ventured a guess that evening, but Charles Manson's zombie posse responsible for the murder of Sharon Tate and several others at the Tate residence that evening as well as Leno and Rosemary LaBianca: Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, and Patricia Krenwinkel seen here pre-murder. For historical reference, the Xs were drawn on their foreheads during Manson's trial as family members and the girls specficially rallyed outside the courthouse. Also, the "Helter Skelter" references the race wars that Manson convinced his followers was imminent and they wrote it on the walls of their murder site in blood.) This was by far our creepiest Halloween yet because to literally be dressing and carrying out the readying of actual murderers as opposed to fictional characters or even the real-life murdered of our past Halloween costumes felt a bit too close to the actual happenings of the Manson ordeal. For instance, these women quite literally got together and drew Xs on their foreheads, just as we were doing. Regardless, it was maybe the most fun costume. Enjoy!

By the end of the night we were looking most realistic, having faced the wind and rain and endless shots from bars, flasks, and straight from the bottle.

Hector Jacket by Kimberly Ovitz / Fishtail Skirt from Bona Drag

Im particularly excited about these two pieces because they are both not only amazing but true assets to my wardrobe, things that serve a purpose in both fashion and function. The jacket is much needed as I have an unusual amount of warm wool coats and a solid foundation in cardigans but nothing but a leather jacket in between. This I will be able to throw on by itself or under a peacoat and still look properly outfitted for the cooling weather. The skirt, on the other hand, is awesome because its so elegant and can be dressed up or down - either way it offers a very versatile base to any top, be it silk, satin, or vintage. Mostly, Im excited to have found two things that not only do I love but I also "need" (says the girl who is really in need of nothing).

Ive been a very disappointing blogger for almost a month.

All of the Fashion Week stuff is just too much for me, everyone else is already saying what there is to be said and so, to avoid becoming redundant or otherwise irrelevant, I have just maintained my silence and I will continue to do so as soon as I say one thing: as much as I loved Alexander Wang's use of braids in New York a few weeks back, in my opinion, Miu Miu did it better. Maybe its because Ive just recently begun middle-parting more than side-parting (and the side part was a big, dramatic thing for me, the end of an era, even) but I just love these braids a little more than the first. I love the mixture of the super sleek and shiny severe part that devolves into the slow unraveling of the braid even down past the hip, framing the clothes rather than distracting from them. While Wang's choice of hair did not distract, it didnt really highlight anything about the rugby inspired collection while the braids from Miu Miu could not make any more perfect sense alongside the hint-of-school-girl pieces. I especially love it with the severe collars and flared skirts. But Thank God because for Miu Miu to do the long braid a second time this season, after the huge success of round one, and not be as good would have been pretty lousy for them:

1. Vena Cava SS 2010

Ive expressed by great admiration for Vena Cava many times on this blog and, opening up fashion week, the girls over there failed to disappoint. The color scheme and polished-DIY-ness and everything down to the nail polish and tribal, beaded necklaces were perfect. Im pretty sure Im going to have to own that red-orange dress come next Spring, its just too beautiful.

2. Braids at Alexander Wang

Been braiding my hair nonstop for the past few months and, though I try, my long and infinitely fine hair refuses to look as spectacular as these models'. It doesnt hurt that they have clip-on pieces and Im using my actual hair which longs to fly out of the plait as soon as the wind hits. Nevertheless, I loved this addition to the runway. Somehow it went perfectly with each of the looks in the collection and though some have spoken out against this collection and others have blindly adored it, I really love the rugby/football look. Especially the stripes and the camel colored leather bags!

3. Models Pre-Fashions Night Out

Im pretty sure this is self-explanitory. As different as I am from these waify women, they (read: mostly) are undeniably good to look at.

4. The Return of Chokers

I mentioned recently that Ive started making jewelry and, consequently, selling the pieces down the street in the East Village but this also means I have been paying extra close attention to other jewelry designs and what looks best in terms of styles and colors and this choker-to-lengthy necklace is spectacular! As a Jewish girl Im not that psyched on the cross, ya know, cos my mom would maybe cry if I wore crosses (though Chris Habana's latest collection really tempted me to break that code of honor), but its not impossible to create something similar with maybe a different set of beads or pendants.

5. Hints of Pendelton Meets Opening Ceremony

No, these skirts/dresses arent Pendelton but I love the air of campy relaxation that they evoke, much like the Pendelton Meets Opening Ceremony collection. Too bad OC only made their skirts in the two weirdest and impossible to dress along with colors. Kills me.

6. The Release of Another Beautiful Maxi Skirt

And I think I like this one better than the first! Is it possible? Apparently so. Id love to have an ensemble like this.

RIP JIM CARROLL

Since reading Basketball Diaries ages ago, Jim Carroll has been one of my absolute favorite authors. Fear of Dreaming sculpted many of my most important understandings and experiences in New York City - as a fifteen year old I carried the book with me all around town trying to catch a glimpse of what Carroll saw in this city. To this day, Love Story still holds a place as my favorite poem, simple and perfect, just the way I loved it as a teenager.

He died of a heart attack in his Manhattan home this past Friday, September 11, 2009 at the age of 60 - he was seated at his desk, working. Of Carroll, Patti Smith says, "I met him in 1970, and already he was pretty much universally recognized as the best poet of his generation. The work was sophisticated and elegant. He had beauty." It was his work with words and music that shaped countless moments through the decades - through film and even launching Leonardo DiCaprio into stardom with his portrayal of Carroll himself, in the film version of The Basketball Diaries. Before anything else, literature and language are my greatest passions and I personally owe Jim Carroll an enormous Thank You for stoking the flames when I was young and angry and without direction, because without work like his to let me know there was something other than Shakespeare Id never have stayed focused, become an English Major at NYU, and have infinite possibilities to incorporate what I love into my future. He will be missed.

Somehow he caters directly to my tastes and often introduces me, through the seasons of his collections, to new concepts that I didnt know I liked. This season is no different. Ive avoided blogging so that I can see everything at the end of Fashion Week and decide which designers to ramble about but this deserves immediate attention. I originally had every intention of stopping by Opening Ceremony, Acne, and several other places but having woken up at 7am, I came home after class and went to take a little nap. Needless to say, I overslept by an hour and ended up rushing over to Oak by 8. Luckily (?!) Bond Street was amass with parties and people and taco trucks so it wasnt a bad thing that I spent most of my time at Oak and on its sidewalk. Next door at The Smile they were serving delicious cocktails complete with Taco Tickets - which I forgot to use. Met up with so many people but went home relatively early after having quite a bit to drink. So good to see so many faces and beautiful outfits!

Iro's upcoming collection blows everything theyve done in the past straight out of the water. Until now, I have not been impressed but, at this moment, I am astonished and delighted and aching for some of this collection. I love these looks for similar reasons for which I love Carin Wester and Kimberly Ovitz - because of the shape of the body they create, the way they promise to fit and allow for curves and hips, creating them where there are none on narrow girls and accentuating the assets of curvier girls - however, these pieces appeal to me more in the way that this modeled is styled. She looks incredible and there is something very satisfying in her look and the way the clothes fit her and her poses. Regardless, I love the clothes. As Im becoming more and more tailored, this is the way I long to dress.

SO HERES WHAT HAPPENED

I went away. First physically and then mentally but "away" nonetheless. My final full-time semester of college starts this week and though I havent saved some enormous workload for the last minute like so many of my friends, I do anticipate some stress and a rather heavy workload. This shouldnt be anything I cant take on but it does mean that, for the first time probably ever, I am interested in succeeding in my academic career and my grades will be my top priority. With that, I have a variety of updates in regards to this blog that I so carelessly neglected the past few weeks and, for that, Im sorry.

1. The Issue With Trousers:
At the end of July I began scouring the Internet and stores all over NYC for the perfect pair of trousers for Fall. I wanted to score not only the perfect fit (difficult for my curvy hips and tiny waist) but a great cut and color, something well made but not wildly expensive, etc. etc. I made several trips to Acne to try on a variety of what they offered and fell in love again and again with the Joni. Originally I wanted to gray pair but after seeing Oak's Fall Collection, I decided to wait it out so I could try on our much cheaper Pleated Sweats. In the end, I went with the light gray Oak pair and the black Jonis. Both are perfect and I cannot wait for it to get cooler in the city so I can wear them with my new jackets.

2. Ive Made Some Purchases:
I also got a crochet Rachel Comey Crop Top as well as a vintage prison tee from Assembly and BDG Boyfriend Jeans and probably some other things that I havent updated about as well. Oh! I found this beautiful white cropped button up by Philip Lim about a month back (I couldnt find a photo online and forgot to alert the presses). Its been a successful late Summer of shopping for Fall - great pieces on Sale that work perfectly into my wardrobe. I cannot wait for it to be jacket weather, clearly, because I am more than ready.

3. DIYing Nonstop
Im not sure why Ive never blogged about this but Ive been making jewelry for awhile now and selling it as New Product to Buffalo Exchange. Sarah Z. - the girl who buys my pieces for the shop - always told me that they sold very quickly but not until recently did I really understand how exciting that is! Ive now seen several shoppers at Oak wearing necklaces Ive made and when I sort of awkwardly tell them that theyve all gotten excited and then other shoppers have taken my email address and well, I guess Im sort of making necklaces for a decent sum now. The past weeks, in my absence, I have made around 40 pieces and in about an hour Im going to drop them off for sale but I took some low-fi photos of my favorites. I use only vintage beading - coral, seashell, hammered silver and gold, snake spine, moon rock, turquoise, brass, crystal, ebony and ivory (no joke) - mixed with seed beading, leather work, oxidized and silver plated chain. There are also some one-of-a-kind shredded lace neckpieces floating around out there that I may try to replicate eventually but, this coming week, there will be dozens of the below pieces available in the East Village.

4. Virgin Free Fest
Completely non fashion related but worth sharing anyway: while I was in Baltimore visiting my parents and making necklaces and going to frat parties (Seriously. I went to one. I played beer pong. Yikes.) I also went to the Virgin Mobile Free Fest with several of old friends who I actually adore and miss having in my life. We saw Wale (terrible, just kept cursing at the crowd rather than performing in any way), Taking Back Sunday (incredible, always a shameless favorite), The Hold Steady (terrible), The National (boring), Public Enemy (awesome, Flava Flav is way less retarded when hes being the best Hype Man alive - also he kept getting the name of the town we were in right rather than calling it D.C. or Baltimore like every other band so he got serious points with me for being on top of his knowledge), Weezer (good but boring), and Blink 182 (wildly entertaining) before randomly stumbling upon the Dance Tent where some insane woodsy rave was going on. Danced for a bit before heading back to my parents house - definitely one of the better visits.

So, there you have it. I will do my best not to pull bad blogger behavior again.

I been staring at the newly released special edition covers of V magazine for about thirty minutes before it occurred to me how dire it was I reposted and commented on them. Honestly, one of the best shoots Ive seen in ages, these photos moved me in my favorite way. At first, I saw them posted incomplete and felt somewhat confused by three exquisite headshots alongside one stark pentagrammed frontal image but now, as I take them in in their entirety, I am blown away. There is something so perfectly creepy to nearly every one of them - bloody steak chestplate, noose neck cincher, crocodile necktie, and - the subtlest of all - raw meat earring. I am blown away. Not to mention, there are images amongst them that do not feature these accessories and that is to the credit of the stylist, for if every girl were adorned in such a way, the magic of that touch would be gone. They are all, however, in full Virginal Sacrifice mode, regardless of whether or not they are adorned with fresh flowers of fresh meat and witchcraft. That being said, these are amazing:

Could it be more beautiful? Im enamored with the curtain behind the couch, for one, but also the office! Bookshelves are an obsession of mine but his could not be both more amazing as a full wall-unit but also the three rows of uniform books and then the smaller items and artifacts on the bottom half dissolve the whole thing so aesthetically well. Its common knowledge that he is one of my favorite designers - I certainly am almost always wearing at least one or two pieces of his at any given moment - but to see how beautiful his home is, I appreciate, because I like things organized and it wouldve broken my heart were he living in a hipster den.

Mine is the beginnings of what, I hope, will someday be a phenomenal vintage jewelry collection. I have intricate pieces from all over the world, some I bought myself, some were eBay wins, some were gifts from my family and friends in their travels (mostly my parents), etc. But Im a pretty rational dresser so there are only a select few that I wear regularly, the newest of which I found downtown at The Reformation. It is a completely unique silver U-shaped base with tiny silver drops attached all over the bottom, creating a subtle texture, attached to black yarn. I love it. But when I stumbled upon Tribal Export's eBay store, I fell in love with nearly every piece they had to offer. Not only do they offer vintage gems of every kind, in beautiful condition, but the prices are rather reasonable if youre dedicated to building a really special collection (For a few bucks here and there, Ive attained some decent items but the more Im willing to spend the better the piece I can make my own and I always get moe use out of something a little nicer even if its a little more.) I hate to say it, but its probably a bit obvious at this point how similar Wester's collection is to my F/W 2009 favorites from Kimberly Ovitz. They share the perfect color palate of black and nude with just the subtlest neutral-based additional hues. Cant get over the way some designers make entire collections that restrict and narrow their customer base so dramatically while these two geniuses have clearly crafted garments that, while beautiful and drapey on runway models, leave room for T&A. Literally. I would and could wear every single thing pictured above. Including the white suit. Beautiful work.

OAK AND OAK BLACK LABEL FOR FALL

On Thursday night I had the distinct pleasure of previewing the Fall 2009 Oak and Oak Black Label pieces from, well, where else, Oak, and they do not disappoint! As usual, there are the phenomenal jeans and tees but the designers over in Greenpoint now welcome beautifuly modern and classic pieces like the square collar melton-wool coat – for both guys and girls – streamlined croc-leggings, pieced leather denim pants and more. Personally, I cannot wait for the cropped sweaters and pleated sweatpants. That is all I will be wearing this cold season, thankyouverymuch. This is perfection: how to wear cut-offs and how to wear strong shoulders and how to wear the middle part. (Just wish I could see what shoes shes wearing!) I tried to emulate it with todays outfit, wearing black vintage Levi cut-offs and Alexander Wang's gray long sleeve pocket T, but I just ended up being overheated and putting my hair up. At least I tried, right? For Fall Im going to need to invest in a top like this, though.

Maybe I just havent noticed but, is there a chance that no one has blogged about these incredible wedges? I know its my job but even when Im away from the store I check the website from Monday to Wednesday to see what I can anticipate upon returning to work at the end of the week and last night, to my delight, there were the most incredible pairs of shoes from Finsk available! Each pair is insanely beautiful, wholly modern, and appear to have all the making of entirely comfortable heels and wedges. My favorite of which, surprise surprise, is the Black Fur Wedge, no longer available online but available at the Bond Street location:

Just a moment ago I approved an Anonymous comment from the genius behind Lambs Ear Shoes - an online boutique that "has been operating out of Seattle, Washington since March 2007. Now offering items available online, we ship anywhere in the United States and overseas. Each shoe available is carefully chosen based on material, craft, and design" - according to the website. Honestly, Im honored that someone from such a well executed shop would have found my blog. Lambs Ear carries the best of LD Tuttle, my absolute favorite designer in shoes and all around beautiful leather work, as well as some incredible Arielle de Pinto necklaces. Despite my enamorment with Langoliers and Pam Liou, in general, de Pinto is a mastermind at delicate but bold statement pieces and there is nothing more Id want in my wardrobe, if only I could afford it. Anyhow, the photos of this boutique only add to its all-around allure. If I were in Washington, Lambs Ear would be my haven.

How beautiful does this place look?! Has anyone been there? Id love to hear a review.

TROUSERS

The word hardly even sounds like a word anymore, Ive used it so much, even in thought, in my Online search for the perfect pair to suit my bizarrely proportioned frame. "Trousers". Trow-zerz. Ridiculous. Anyhow, Acne Pre-Fall seems to be the best place for my hunt to end. I tried to more reasonably priced route and purchased Urban Outfitters Silence + Noise Pleated Trouser (there it is again!) but my thighs were ever so slightly too thick and I just wasnt comfortable in them, for fear that if I sat down too quickly without adjusting the fabric, I might just rip right out of them, Hulk-style. So, those went back where they came from. S+N also makes a Slouch Trouser but Rayon makes me nervous. I want the bang for my buck so Im raising the bar and Ive narrowed the possibilities to Acne's Pre-Fall Joni Black and Gray, the Zoom, the Former, and Spring Sale on the Zero Dart for good measure. Definitely leaning towards the Joni because I feel the minimal pleating will best flatter my hips but also Im not a huge fan of the bulge in the crotch and waist created by the fold over buttoning of the Zoom and the Former. Hopefully I can make it out to their Chinatown store this weekend and figure this mess out because I really need pants.

FAVORITE FOR FALL 09

This is it. This is my Fall wardrobe - by Kimberly Ovitz - every single piece is perfect, exactly what Ive imagined for myself this season. Just now I stumbled upon Highsnobette's post about this collection and I immediately had to blog about it myself. I shouldve guessed it, too, because last Winter, I stumbled upon the perfect trench almost halfway through the season and it was an Ovitz piece - dark dark green, slightly oversized, completely beautiful - I even brought it to Israel and wore it all over the place, including a four mile walk from the Wall in Jerusalem to our hotel on the outskirts of the city. Needless to say, it was a durable piece. Its going to be my personal mission in the coming weeks and months to make several of these pieces my own, mostly the nude bodycon dress and the shredded sweater, because they are so utterly perfect, everything about them, from the color palette, to the proportions and fit, everything. Well done is really all I have to say.

SPOTLIGHT ON SAMMA JEWELRY

This started as a post about a variety of pieces and different jewelers that have inspired pre-Fall lust for 2009, but I kept coming back to Samma, Hanna Sandin's line, because I favored several of her pieces over a mix of any others. Shes been written up everywhere, lately, in anticipation of her pop up work for Urban Outfitters Space 15 Twenty. Of Samma, 15 Twenty Blog wrote:

"Hanna Sandin of Samma is another favorite. Hanna is a fine arts artist, most of the work I have seen are of her sculpture and they are exquisite. It's so exciting to experience the different areas of one's fine arts and design talent and have them both equally impressive and unique. Hanna's artistic background is prevalent in her jewelry. You can really experience the tactile nature of her work, not only graphically in a two-dimensional surface pattern standpoint of her woven wire collar necklaces but also from a 3-D standpoint. This is especially clear in the little and big loop necklaces with her knotted braided brass cording. She also makes her own beads out of leather by rolling stripes of leather. She pairs down materials in the most sophisticated way. Samma is about minimalism and repetition."

Refinery 29 also featured Samma and Sandin with their article Samma Jewelry Weaves Itself Into the Scene, in which they said:

Sometimes the best press for a designer is simply just wearing it out. That's how we stumbled upon New York artist Hanna Sandin's new line of sometimes sculptural, sometimes soft jewelry that goes by the Swedish name for "same," Samma. On this particular evening Sandin had layered three of her Leather Wrap necklaces in gold, black and silver—an enticing display that prompted enthusiastic compliments and a bar napkin information exchange. Lo and behold, another night on the town, another spotting. This time, it was designer Mary Ping sporting a brass wire Samma creation, Big Loop, that sources say is often Ping's centerpiece. An elegant woman of Swedish decent—and a familiar face among art and fashion circles—the six-foot-tall designer is rarely seen without one of her creations around her neck. Im just absolutely crazy about these pieces - they are beautiful statements without being overtly trendy or over-the-top with color or size. My favorite is that triangle bead piece because Im obsessed with all things three sized lately, but I just think its incredibly innovative without compromising timelessness. Id love to make it mine but unfortunately it seems that this particular piece is nowhere to be found! Im going to have to stop by the LES' Zadeh Boutique, the one place I can identify that recently took up Samma. Any of these pieces would be fine with me, honestly. Cant wait to see where Hanna Sandin goes with her beautiful line!

Rarely do I feel compelled to take my own photo and this makes me a somewhat lousy blogger. Yesterday, however, I was inspired by Nikki at Dirty Flaws' use of Photo Booth's double effect to capture not only my adorable Heidi braid hairdo (my new favorite) but also the Mary Meyer Diamond Crop Top that I own and was featured in Refinery 29's spotlight on Lisa Mayock. Its a great piece - theres nothing better than soft material and amazing patterns - but I often have a hard time working into my wardrobe, but I was semi-inspired so I took a few egomaniacal shots. EVIL GENIUS OF COLOR

Color is a personal issue, for I am simply terrible at utilizing it in my wardrobe. I hate just one bright color amongst all-black but I dont know how to mix colors without feeling crazy so I just stick to what I know and love - blacks and neutrals. But, however, that is not to say that I am absolutely ape-shit crazy for those that succeed where I do not. First and foremost, Christian Joy (obviously her muse, Karen O, as well as MIA and Bjork amongst those) because when it rains it pours and thank god for that. Described as "an American fashion designer best known for her stage costume designs for Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O. Using found articles and occasionally eschewing thread and print for glue and marker pens she has influenced contemporary fashion with punk and DIY stylings," I so admire having the mental capacity and creative vision to not only mastermind but make a reality the pieces that she does for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontlady - they are intricate and immense but also endlessly mind blowing to behold in the very best way possible. I even have one of her pieces in my closet but its a white distressed silk number that falls far from her costumes on the map of her work. Obviously, I think shes a great success and an evil genius for taunting me with her rainbow seizing talents, two of my favorites below:

In these two numbers, in particular, there is just such an unusual and bizarre attention to detail and a real utilization of the female form as a space for artistic potential and while that may not be my personal aesthetic and functioning style, I am so glad it works for someone (namely Ms. O) and that there are brain waves making it happen in Ms. Joy!

THE EERILY BEAUTIFUL

Ive mentioned it before and I will say it again, if I have to: I love anything that creeps me out while remaining completely and utterly beautiful. Just as Aoi Kotsuhiroi's hair, bone, porcelain, and crystal jewelry line did earlier this year, Dezeen's work absolutely fits into this special place in my heart. Dezeen's Anna Schwamborn also uses authentic human hair but also human ashes of cremated loved ones in her jewelry but also a more polished gold detailing and black bone china. Schwamborn has worked for Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood and is studying at Central St Martins in London. She describes Dezeen:

The collection of objects contains post-mortem memorial pieces which include aspects of a deceased corpse, namely hair and cremated ashes. Several months ago, I blogged endlessly about the Vena Cava Thoth Dress and with the help of the amazing Lisa Mayock of the brand, itself, I was able to make it my own just in time for my 21st Birthday dinner. She has been in Oak on many occassions and is not only incredibly talented, adorable, and endlessly lovely, she is a superb Blogger! I love being able to see her inspiration as well as glimpses of her life - its clear that fashion is everywhere in her life but without pretention or nonsense or too much glitz and glamour, the way it would seem that most designers, especially those that are successful, would seem to have their admirers and audience think. Refinery 29 recently did an elaborate cover on her, only showcasing her ever more. I love the images they used - pairing shots of Lisa looking perfect with close-ups of her apartment's decor:

DO I HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING MYSELF

Apparently so. Its official: Im going DIY crazy. Today Pam sat and watched me sew random fabric together in an attempt to make a fabric tube necklace (sock knit does not work well or look even remotely attractive, FYI) and then needle leather trim to itself instead. Plus, to add to my already insane bead collection, Ive begun ordering all kinds of triangle pieces (clearly also obsessed with triangles), and just now I placed an enormous order for the most amazing studs. Im going to do a very ambitious jacket as soon as I find the perfect garment. But mostly, I noticed that I hadnt posted anything of the huge heap of shirts I shredded until my fingers bled - figureatively, of course - and I wanted to take some up close shots before I sold them all. Hopefully my jewelry design will improve with the arrival of a few more options and then that can be something I brag more about. As of now, I just make stuff and sell it immediately to keep my hands moving and new options on my plate.

Look how amazing those pyramid studs are! I cannot wait to have them all over everything I own.
Only kidding, though. They are for one specific purpose and that is not to ruin but to enhance my clothes.

These babies, on the other hand, I intend to make many items from. You could even buy one!
Lanyard and The Be Side both utilize the solo triangle very well but I intend on finding an even
better way of doing it. I especially love the ridges on the brass lot and the other are handmade.

ROSARY

The Oak Jewelry Trunk Show last night was an immense success. It seriously couldnt have gone any better. There was an enormous turn out and despite the growing sauna-like atmosphere of the store, itself, the party went on far later than 9 oclock. I met such good people, such a seriously friendly atmosphere. All of the designers that showed - Langoliers, Pamela Love, Chris Habana, and Anna Sheffield - had amazing pieces available on the spot and for pre-order. I, myself, only made one purchase on the spot - the Triangle Rosary by Chris Habana that Ive been eyeing ever since I first posted about the event and caught a glimpse of it on his site. Needless to say, its just as amazing in person and hung really well which is a feat because having big boobs is not condusive to successful necklace wearing (hence all the bracelets and rings in my collection). Im most excited, however, to see what Langoliers will be coming out with for Fall. Pam Liou, the founder and Women's designer for Langoliers, Im proud to say, has become a dear friend of mine and she recently recruited Zon Chu to be her Men's designer. Just seeing her newest breastplate piece last night as well as the delicate gunmetal duo that Zon was wearing gives me great hopes for their future in the jewelry business because the work is only getting better and more beautiful.

TUTTLE FOREVER AND EVER

This will be my last shoe post for at least a few days, I swear it.
Early this morning I posted about Siren Shoes, sort of equating their unique wearability to that of LD Tuttle, my all-time favorite shoe line. It then occurred to me that I hadnt get gushed madly over their Fall/Winter Collection for 2009, which now includes Men's Shoes, and beautiful Men's Shoes at that. There is the same form-fitting sensibility to this new collection as there has been in the past - heels arched not only for aesthetics but for comfort, properly distributing the body's weight onto the foot as not to destroy the arch but to make walking elegant and completely easy; the softest leather that still, somehow, scuffs far less easily than one might think, allowing for frequent wear rather than fearful occasioned showings; details the die for. I cant decide which of the new designers in my favorite - it might be The Pilgrim, it might be The Escapist, or it could be The Arc - only time will tell, depending on which joins the ranks in my closet. I did, however, recently make my own the black cut-out wedge by Tuttle's Urban Outfitters collaborative Colonial Madness, but I cannot decide whether or not to keep them or save the money. They look a bit like horse's hooves, though I love the way they look off the foot. Plus, there is the newest strapped boot that I still could not love more than last seasons, of which I have three pairs. All I can do is thank LD Tuttle for constantly making my options vast and utterly incredible, I guess!

INTRODUCED TO SIREN SHOES

Thanks to Gena over at Stole My Name for the recommendation comment to my last post, pointing me in the direction to Siren Shoes, an Australian shoe line that combined couture extremes such as Balenciaga shapes and LD Tuttle constructive resources with a more accessible practicality reminiscent of Ash and, well, LD Tuttle. Im not sure I can afford the shipping costs from across the globe and, well, honestly, I shouldnt spend money on boots just yet but Ive certainly got my eye on this first pair, and the second, and the third, and the fourth. Hopefully I can make one of these my own at some point in the near future. The Drift just seems like a much more wearable version of that Sam Edelman Balenciaga-Knock-Off Hoof Heel from Victoria Secret (that is being redone for LF shortly, by the way) and in a way I can truly imagine suiting me quite well. Im going to have to wait and see - this shoe decision is proving very difficult. Keep the advice on places to shop coming my way, there is nothing I like learning better than of another outlet in which to empty my wallet.

THE PATENT PROBLEM

So, these were a complete and utter FAIL. They were such a disappointment. First of all, they were completely flimsy and weighed almost nothing, in a bad way. The chipped wood effect is poorly painted on and the shape is really bizarre in person. Its like Charles David had never seen a human foot and widened them in the wrong place but place very narrow and stretchless patent leather over said place so that getting the foot all the way in is a challenge but there is far too much area around it. Needless to say, I sent them back, but I still want a cute and wearable pair of patent open toed shoes! So, Im thinking several things: First, there is a pair of BCBG bootie sandals on Sale at Nordstrom and then there are a pair of Calvin Klein's on sale at Bloomingdales, but mostly there is that amazing CK sandal photographed by Jak & Jil recently that would be incredible to locate (no matter how I try, I can find neither a name nor a location to make these mine). What to do. What to do.

DIY AND DONE

Months planning and hours shredding, studding, crocheting, slashing, and sewing later, DIY or Die has finally happened! First and foremost, thank you to everyone who played a role in making this happen as well as the many who showed up to make DIY or Die what it was! It was a beautiful day and the whole thing looked great and I cannot say enough good things about my experience working with Urban Outfitters and all of their amazing employees. They did so much to make this happen and make everything seem so easy - such a positive workplace. Plus, all the pieces done by Nikki, Jeralyn, Pam, Tiffany and Christina were amazing and I was very grateful to have such chosen a good group of girls to work with. Molly from Rackk and Ruin, Amanda from Is Mental, and Jessie from Burn These Bones were in the crowd, as well as Jessica from What I Wore. Jessica was one of the contest winners, chosen by the Six Six Sick Girls, and she was an excellent audience member, complete with DIY experience as well as informed and intruiged questions and there is nothing more a nervous presenter could ask for. Anyhow, Urban's professional photographer, Michael Vorassi, was there. He took so many pictures and did such a thorough job covering the event, as proof:

OAK PRESENTS ITS FAMILY JEWELS

Thursday, July 16th, the Williamsburg Oak invites you to an in store Jewelry Trunk Show, featuring Oak favorites - Pamela Love, Chris Habana, Anna Sheffield, and Pam Liou of Langoliers. From 6pm to 9pm there will be refreshments, bites, meet-and-greets with the designers, themselves, and a chance to get your hands on the last of this seasons designs as well as pre-order what each of these designers will be offering for Fall 2009. This event marks the first of what will be an end-of-summer series presented by the staff at Williamsburg. We also have planned a Gallery Event featuring the Fake Orange Zine on the second Friday of August, the 14th, as well as a Blogger Event that will, hopefully, include some of you out there in the Internet world, for just an evening of hanging out and shopping with the best of 'em. Plus, on Friday nights we will now stay open past 9pm and will be serving wine and snacks and having DJs in the store. TOPSHOP NEVER STOPS

I cannot get over how on top of the trends Topshop really is - every time I click "New Arrivals" on their website, I am surprised and amazed at what I find there. Sure, a lot of it is underwhelming in real life but there is so much to find that even having a few incredible pieces is enough to set Topshop miles ahead of any of its rivals. Its also undeniable to admit that the styling for their shoots and site images really showcases the pieces better than possible. For instance, the Fall 2009 Lookbook pieces in the images above, when picked apart, could seem ridiculous. A purple shiny tulip skirt? A sequin color block mini dress? Baggy blue floral shorts? But in outfits together, somehow they are knockouts. Im loving that gray floral mini dress and the long blazer, not to mention the cut out bustier! Yes please! But most of all I am looking forward to Topshops newer shoes - they are looking way less tacky this season. The thigh highs look delicious and the platform sandals are impecable. Hopefully I can control my wallet come Fall.

Im not proud to admit it, but I dont have a (functioning) digital camera - hence the lack of photos of any quality or frequency. Usually, it takes me a long time to finally cut into any article of clothing, no matter how badly I want to DIY it, for fear that I may ruin something already satisfactory but last name, out of the blue, I pulled out a pair of Silence + Noise black denim shorts - a pair I wear frequently but had a few complaints about - and began a completely unplanned project. The stars mustve been aligned because the outcome is just too good to be true. First I took my newest and most favorite batch of studs, silver triangles, and made a trapezoid (I wish it were a triangle but I didnt have enough studs - soon enough, though) on the back left pocket, and then, upon putting them on this morning, I hacked off the hems and shredded a bit of the bottom, cutting off the extra fringe so that they are simply frayed, rather than distressed. They are now perfect. My buttcheeks stick out. I love them. Walked all around the city in them today, paired with an oversized black shirt, tucked into the studded pocket, with a variety of brass and silver bangles from several Etsy designers, three silver rings, tortiseshell Ray Bans and my Acne Above 1 pumps. It was a great outfit and therefore, a great day. Its really that simple.

As you may have noticed, a contest was held for two spots on the RSVP list for DIY or Die and now that
the event is only days away, the winners must be announced! So, Ladies and Gentlemen, here they are:

No. 1 - Nadia at We Were Damsels
First of all, she seems like a sweetheart and Im a sucker for her enthusiasm. But beyond that, she DIYed a really awesome pair of jeans and apparently theyre her only DIY! Such good work for a first timer. I love the way shes wearing the jeans in both pictures, exactly the way to wear DIY - confident and natural. I know I lacked both traits when I first started DIYing. Id walk out of the house wearing something that I loved having made and somehow, several blocks later, Id feel a bit self-conscious. Though it probably had something to do with how miserable by first DIYs were, I love how well shes pulling off her bleached denim. Congrats, Nadia!

No. 2 - Shiela's DIY Sock Monkeys

My high school years were spent doing frequent volunteer work so, its safe to say, this DIY really made me proud. Not only are the Sock Monkeys adorable, but they "are sold to benefit artists with special needs around the city," Shiela explained. Though she didnt I don't have any pictures of specific monkeys that only she had made "because they have already been sold," the picture shows a basket of monkeys made by both artists and volunteers. I love not only the mission itself, but the project. I, for one, dont exclude general arts and crafts from the genre of DIY. Id love to have Shiela has an attendant of DIY or Die, that way she can learn to use her vast and apparent skills in crafting and sewing to create within her wardrobe, for herself, as well! Congrats, Shiela!

Its already the middle of the Summer, I know, but I cannot bear my Slow and Steady Wins the Race canvas wedges any more - I have both the sandal and the slingback - and my feet swell so much in my Acne's that Lisa has threatened me, so I finally stopped lying to myself by watching endless Marni sandals on Ebay and I finally buckled down, did some research and picked out a pair of cheap sandals to destroy for the remaining hot months in the city. It was a debate between these, from a brand Ive never heard of nor owned, and the Nine West Ripple, but these Charles David Tinker wedges won out. They have a platform front, which makes a difference, apparently, because customer ratings were quite high. Plus, its satisfying to have found them originally for $103 and then hunted and discovered then for $70 - a price that will allow me to feel just a bit less monsterous about the things my shoes suffer. Reminicent of Marni wedges, themselves, I may end up pulling a Childhood Flames and Sharpie the sole for a solid black look but, as I learned with my Acne wins, I do like the natural base. Anyhow, I hope they arrive before Sunday! Im planning an afternoon of going nuts on Oak's new Alexander Wang arrivals later this week so, it should be a good next few days of shopping and endless DIYing.
